Position Summary
AINW is recruiting for an Archaeological Assistant for field projects, some of which may require travel and overnight stays. This position is responsible for a variety of tasks related to project work in the field and the laboratory. This position is temporary and project based.
Essential Responsibilities
Working as part of an archaeological team conducting field work.
Performing heavy physical labor using a variety of hand tools and equipment.
Carrying equipment and setting up work sites, at times far removed from access roads.
Documenting excavation sites and the data recovered.
Conducting surface surveys and excavating shovel tests, QTUs, and 1×1 meter units.
Mapping sites and features and sketching soil stratigraphy.
Working in weather conditions that can become very severe.
Will drive company vehicles regularly, some of which will be large 4X4 vehicles.
Secondary Responsibilities
Cleaning hand tools and equipment, washing trucks.
Will perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills Required
At least one year of archaeological field work experience which includes site excavation.
B.S./B.A. degree in anthropology with course work specific to archaeology.
Ability to write clearly and succinctly.
Previous experience with site forms and cataloging.
Ability to work with detailed and standardized processes and routines.
Ability to proficiently conduct excavations, from shovel testing to data recovery.
Ability to complete assigned tasks effectively and efficiently.
Ability to anticipate next steps in all work assigned and take appropriate action.
Ability to work well with others – communicate clearly, be team oriented, willing to contribute above and beyond basic expectations, and provide support and leadership to those less skilled and experienced.
Strong work ethic, integrity, and professionalism.
Candidates must be competent with Microsoft Office Suite.
The ability to lift and carry heavy loads, and to bend, stoop, twist, and turn while holding heavy or cumbersome objects.
The ability to work long hours outdoors in all types of terrain and at times, in extreme weather conditions.
A current driver license and a driving record that qualifies the employee for inclusion on the Company’s vehicle operator insurance plan.
